David Abercrombie actually established the business on June 4, 1892 in Manhattan, New York. It began as a high class sporting goods store. Ezra Fitch happened to be one of the store’s most frequent customers, and he was also a wealthy attorney. In 1900 Fitch bought major shares in the Abercrombie company and became a co-owner.
