Online college makes getting a degree possible for almost anyone. Even if you work full time or stay home to raise your children, there is a way to get your bachelors degree. Non-traditional students are embracing the flexibility of bachelor degree. Everything is adjusted to fit your schedule, the lectures, the exams and your study time. You can take several classes or one at a time, it’s all up to you. Being in control of their schedule may be one of the reasons one quarter of all college students are now taking at least one class online.

If you want to go back to school to get your college degree, go for it! Even if you put in 40 or more hours a week at a job and have family responsibilities, you can do it. Accredited online universities are helping more non traditional students fit college into their already busy lives. Online college is opening up education opportunities to professionals, stay at home parents or anyone interested in adding to their education. Distance learning allows the student to control their schedule and work load.

Rising numbers of students have reportedly set out to advance their credentials in a shrunken and increasingly competitive job market, contributing to an increase in master’s degree enrollments, according to Inside Higher Education. And new and expanded master’s university degree programs were being established to accommodate them, the publication last year reported.

It should come as no surprise that of all the STEM (science, tech, engineering, and math) careers, one of the fastest growing in the country is computer software engineering. It seems the best online degree is one that allows entry into this growth field. In fact, it’s growing so fast that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is splitting into two definitive specialties – Software Systems Engineers and Applications Engineers. While there’s overlap between them, they are well on their way towards establishing unique and definitive characteristics. For this article let’s focus on the systems engineer.

If one is considering a career in the life sciences, probably one of the most in-demand specialties is agricultural. One need only turn on the news to understand why. It’s almost cliche to say world hunger is an epidemic. Even the diets of prosperous countries are becoming noted for their lack of nutritional value. The need for this STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) occupation alone makes it in high demand and for those who are considering it, a science degree is a natural way to start.

Many a cartoon was built on the country bumpkin coming to the big city to make his or her future. What many city slickers may not know is it was representative of a problem of the previous century. Country living has many a virtue, but they have struggled to give the same opportunities as their urban counterparts. Unless they are going into agriculture, most country kids graduate high school to few job opportunities in their local arenas. Even the colleges they need to advance themselves are mostly located in metropolitan areas. So they leave. Some call this out-migration.

At its core, mathematics is the language of science. Without it, the various STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields wouldn’t be able to communicate with each other. Also, everything from your next airplane flight, insurance rate or the brackets on March Madness (and their odds) would be nigh impossible to do. Without a mathematician called a biometrician, any drug you take could end up being lethal.

There are a number of reports every year saying the number of scientists in the U.S. is shrinking. From the Bureau of Labor Statistics to the most erudite of universities and professional organizations, the one thing each and every report concludes is there just aren’t enough to go around. That doesn’t mean there aren’t trying to increase their numbers one way or another. That’s why the federal government started the STEM (for scientist, technologist, engineer and math) Program with the National Foundation of Science at the beginning of the 21st Century which now seems to dovetail perfectly with the many online schools.

In discussing the different engineering fields, many would describe mechanical engineers as inventors. Their job is to create mechanical solutions and push technology to its limits. The more complex the problem, the more fun they have solving it. The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines the specialty as the research, design, development and manufacture of mechanical devices. Students getting an online engineering degree are moving into an ever-changing field.

Every army has a general. When it comes to producing something animated, particularly a feature length film, TV series or a hit video game, one needs a small army of specialists to get the project done, both on time and on budget. As for the field general who runs said legion? That’s the animation director.
